In keeping with the times, home team games were blacked out in the vicinity; at no matter what level, be they regular season, playoff, even super bowl... (Superbowl III was blacked out in Miami..Imagine the UK saw the game but south beacher's couldn't!). So you were forced to listen on radio. But this was OK since the broadcast team at WABC was Merle Harmon and Sam Deluca .. the best to ever call a game..You would think you were watching on TV that's how good they were.. I'll never forget the call by Merle Harmon upon the 61 yard completion late in the game to Mr Otis Taylor ( prior to the catch it was a 6-6 tie; a great defensive struggle by both teams).. my heart sank..Joe Namath was one of my idols; and the great John Elliot # 80 (not to be confused with Jumbo).. We had every chance in the world to win that game. I think we were at the one yard line at least 2 times with first downs..But the KC Chiefs had Willie Lanier, Buchannan and Culp all three of which were hall of famers; not to mention Arron Brown; they were a great team..That game saw 10 hall of famers;(KC 9 including their head coach);(NY 1;guess who).. The last arrow/bullet of the afternoon came when Mike Battle fumbled a punt after the defense held.. albeit with 39 seconds left to play. But remember Maynard was sidelined with a broken foot;..no speed at the wide outs.. 50 years later that ghost still haunts.. So we only scored 6 points; 2 field goals; 13-6 final score..This was the beginning of the slide for the New York Jets;they didn't see another playoff game until 1981 when the NY Sack exchange came to be.. Mr Klecko and co..Like the 1964 Yankee team after losing the world series to the Cardinals in 7; everybody got old all at once; The Yanks didn't see another playoff game until 1976...Hope you've enjoyed some nostalgia out there..Sincerely.. All w...I was 14 years old at the time of the game.. All week I couldnt wait for Saturday to come....Back then home team games were blacked out so we had to listen to the game on the radio with the great tandem of Sam Deluca and Merle Harmon calling the game. Harmon was the best of the best.. the way he called a game you thought you were at the game.. To this day 50 years later that 63 yard pass completion to Otis Taylor.. i can still feel the pain. This was the most heart wrenching loss as a Jet fan I've ever experienced ..and Lord knows we've had our Share. It was a game that we should have won... Joe Namath my idol as a kid and the great defensive tackle # 80 John Elliot ( God rest his soul)... Those were the days my friends.....
